CHP Istanbul MP Barış Yarkadaş has stated that the government has recently launched a massive intimidation campaign aimed at social media users. Yarkadaş, noting that until now 3,500 people have been arrested for what they have written, while 1,500 people have been remanded in custody, said, ‘The police have compiled case reports covering 17,000 people who use social media, and are trying to identify the addresses of 45,000 users.’

CHASING UP TWEETS, NOT BOMBERS

Yarkadaş, stating that the Social Media Monitoring Unit within the police was tracking social media posts, said, ‘Prosecutors will act on the case reports compiled by the unit. Arrest procedures are not being conducted since custody suites in Istanbul are full.’ Barış Yarkadaş voiced his opposition to these procedures with the words: ‘The state police are spending their days chasing up who posted which Tweet, rather than apprehending bombers’
