With nine desertions emerging in the vote on moving on to the individual articles of the proposed constitution, AKP and MHP members traded accusations over desertions. In both parties, there was an attempt prior to voting on the individual articles to identify the MPs who did not support the proposal, and those MPs suspected of not voting ‘yes’ were subjected to close monitoring,

DESERTIONS INCREASING

Thanks to the efforts of AKP and MHP whips, the number of desertions fell to one in the vote on Article 1 governing the independence of the courts. However, on Article 2 that increases the number of MPs to 600, there were five desertions from the ‘approval front’. When it came to the vote on Article 3 reducing the age for standing for parliament, the rejection vote rose to its highest level at 139.

Halaçoğlu still on the ‘no’ side

With discussions over desertions still raging, Bahçeli was noticed having a lengthy conversation with the MHP’s Yusuf Halaçoğlu, who is on the ‘rejection front’. Following these discussions, it was alleged that Bahçeli had persuaded Halaçoğlu. However, Halaçoğlu said, ‘No, I haven’t changed my mind.’

AKP members defend ‘open voting’ with their fists
During the ballot on Article 3, with AKP members attempting to prevent CHP members from filming MPs who were casting open votes, a fight involving punches and kicks erupted in front of the voting booths.
