Quran first for children then reading and writing

The Department of Religious Affairs, which started providing education at 14,597 Quran courses nationwide in 2018, has increased the number of courses by ten per cent with the opening of a further 1,427 courses in seven months. The Religious Affairs Department, which gave Quranic education to 87,790 preliterate children in the 4-6 age group in the 2016-2017 educational year, has increased this number by 49.24% in the first seven months of the year, bringing it to 131,026.

 Comparison of data in the Department of Religious Affairs’ 2017 Annual Report and the 2018 Institutional Financial Standing and Expectations Report reveals that Quran course education is moving full steam ahead to reach out to millions.

 According to the 2017 Annual Report, the Department of Religious Affairs provided education by means of 14,597 Quran Courses in the 2017-2018 educational year. The most recent report encapsulating the first seven months of 2018 shows that it approved the opening of 1,427 Quran Courses and the courses commenced educational activities. Meanwhile, 23 courses that were not fit for educational purposes were moved to newly constructed buildings. Readmitted to the system were 131 courses that had for various reasons suspended teaching activity.

 81,000 learners by rote

 On comparison of the two reports, the number of students receiving education at all types of Quran courses appears to have increased. In the 2016-2017 educational year 33,720 students were instructed in learning the Quran by rote, while 18,298 students were admitted to the Quran Rote Learning Basic Education Programme.

 With the Religious Affairs Department serving a total of 52,018 students last year on these two types of rote learning instruction, the total number of students admitted in the first seven months of 2018 was 81,926. The Department of Religious Affairs started admitting children in the 4-6 age group to Quran course education in 2013. On that date, the number of courses opened within the programme that was first implemented in ten provinces on a pilot basis was close to 3,000. The Religious Affairs Department has also raised the bar in this area. Providing Quran education to 87,790 preliterate students in the pre-school age of between four and six in the 2016-2017 educational year, the Religious Affairs Department has raised this figure to 131,026 by July of this year. As such, the Religious Affairs Department has increased the number of students to which it gives pre-school Quran education by 49.24%.

 The number of students receiving education on “Needs-Focussed Quran Course,” catering in particular for workers in the public and private sector outside working hours, has risen from 889,710 to 933,060.
