Months of effort to compile the list – now he is on it!

Turhan Günay, who has worked at Cumhuriyet Newspaper for close to thirty years and as Book Supplement Publishing Manager for twenty-five of these, was remanded despite no accusation being made against him for simply having been a member of the foundation for one period in the past. Turhan Günay put in months of effort to compile the detailed list of writers, publishers, translators and journalists who were jailed or murdered in the Ottoman and Republican periods published in the Book Supplement under the headline “Never-Ending Arrests in the Publishing World”.
 
In the space of one month, the victim of a political decision, Turhan Günay now finds himself on that very list he had taken such pains to compile.
THE VERY BOOK SUPPLEMENT AND LIST TURHAN GÜNAY BROUGHT OUT A MONTH AGO
Bans, arrests, detentions, long terms in jail, executions and, as if these were not enough, murders seem to be encoded in the DNA of those who wield state power. This proclivity once again appears to have reared its ugly head here and now among the ranks of those who govern our country. With a ‘zeal’ outstripping anything seen at times of military coups, writers, publishers and journalists suffer arrest, detention and imprisonment. Dismissals, unemployment and condemnation to starvation are but added refinements to this policy. There is an effort to subdue thought, art and culture.
It is an unwavering truth that whether circumstances be normal or abnormal writers, publishers and journalists will nevertheless be the first to suffer. In the list provided for your perusal below, I have tried to chronicle those writers, translators, publishers, cartoonists and journalists who have been detained, jailed, murdered or exiled since the middle of the 19^th century. On the list, you will encounter the names of many people who, while writers, were detained for political reasons. I know them to have been writers, publishers and journalists and this is the reason that earns them inclusion on the list.
The list has been arranged alphabetically. I am aware that this list is far from comprehensive. This is due to the dearth of reports and articles on this matter, nowadays as much as in previous years. In particular, virtually nothing apart from a few mentions was published about the exiles and deaths in the course of the 1915 events. I know that debate and research into this subject continues. You will see the names of writers, publishers and journalists who lost their lives in exile included in the ‘murdered’ section. I think the chronicle can be fleshed out with your assistance. Do not be astonished at the appearance of certain of our writers’ names in more than one section. This is because some of them were both detained and jailed, and in some cases also murdered.
I have been unable to include arrests and dismissals on the list (and major writers are included among the teachers and academics to be sacked in the past months) or fully account for the fate of those political publications that were closed or removed from distribution before and after the 1971 and 1980 coups and their publishers. I know that this is another subject that is crying out for study, and I will attend to this. It must sink home with those who hold political office that punishing writers, publishers and journalists serves no purpose.
For, they cannot erase the signatures on books and articles. Ideas, once published and having found an audience, attain permanence. Those writers are forever more a source of pride for their nations and the world. But nobody remembers those who in the past punished them, nor will remember those who do so in the future. Nâmık Kemal and Nâzım Hikmet were traitors for the administrators of the era. They subsequently lived on as ‘national poets’, and will continue to do so. Just as the others did and will do. Hands off our writers, publishers and journalists already!
