The 12 March coup had taken place and the hunt for leftists in the country had started. Hundreds of left-wing academics and journalists had been remanded in custody. One arm of the operation stretched into the Ankara Law Faculty. In a written tip-off, assistant Uğur Mumcu was accused of inciting anarchistic events. According to a document emanating from the General Staff, the ‘Gentleman Informing Citizen: Can Özbay’ was an intelligence service agent.
