Working Journalists Day of 10 February was also on the parliamentary agenda yesterday. HDP and CHP MPs said that the remanding of journalists pending trial was ‘a form of torture.’ The MPs read out a statement by the Turkish Union of Journalists also calling for the immediate release of remanded journalists.

The CHP’s Utku Çakırözer, a journalist by trade, commented, ‘We want an end to the harsh treatment resulting under the state of emergency. Having press workers in prison does not only impede the right to obtain news but also comes as a black mark against democracy.’
