‘WE LOVE YOU’ EVIDENCE OF A CRIME
Ege University is also punishing students who have expressed support for the peace-signatory teachers that it expelled. Philosophy student, Alçay Çelik, who was awarded a temporary debarment, said, ‘An investigation was launched because I was reading a book in the corridors on the day the academics were expelled. The notices reading, “We want peace. We love you” that we hung on teachers’ doors were cited in evidence.’
GRADUATES DEBARRED, TOO
Ruhat Alkan, from the psychology department, was penalised despite being a graduate. Alkan said, ‘I earned the right to graduate in January. In spite of this, an investigation was launched because of the declaration of support for the Peace Academics at the school. Even though I have finished school, I was debarred from the school for six months.’ Emine Akbaba, on the other hand, was debarred for eighteen months and thrown out of the hostel where she was staying.
