HDP Şanlıurfa MP Osman Baydemir, who had been arrested in Izmir where he had gone as part of his party’s schedule of events and had given a statement at the judicial complex, made an announcement on exiting the judicial complex. Baydemir, saying they had been arrested because they did not acquiesce to the ruling party’s incorrect policies, spoke as follows:

“Unfortunately, all democratic rights and freedoms are under great threat in this country. What is involved is not just Osman Baydemir being arrested, taken to the judicial complex and having his statement taken. What is involved is the usurpation of the electoral right of the will of millions. Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ, İdris Baluken, Çağlar Demirel and finally Enis Berberoğlu, too. Why are all these members of parliament in jail? Why have they been detained? Because they engaged in opposition. They have been detained because they did not acquiesce to the ruling party’s incorrect policies. And I am here today because of this. I gave a statement and made comments. There is something that without doubt needs to be known. Sooner or later rights and the truth will triumph in this part of the world. Sooner or later freedom will be victorious. When the mechanism called the “judiciary” loses its independence, it is society that will suffer great harm. We, today, may be the individual victims of this, but when the judiciary loses its independence society will suffer harm. This is why we are resisting injustice. We believe freedom will win.”

The HDP’s Baydemir, following his announcement, departed from the judicial complex to take part in his party’s schedule of events.
